What qualifications do you need to become a cleaner?

There are no specific set of qualifications needed to become a Cleaner. Usually employers are looking for someone who is hardworking, organised and self-motivated.

If you are working in a school or with vulnerable people, you may need a DBS check, but usually your employer pays for this. 

Do you need training to become a cleaner?

Yes, and it will be fully provided by your manager!

You'll learn a range of skills, and within your first week you'll know your job inside out. Usually you'll have another cleaner showing you the ropes for a few days, then once you've got your head around it they'll give you your own designated area to work on.

Even if you're working alone in one area, you all work as a team to pull together. 

What skills do I need to become a cleaner?

You'll need the following skills:

  • Attention to detail
  • Positive attitude 
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Fast & efficient 
  • Punctual 
  • Awareness of health & safety procedures 
  • Willingness to learn new things / new ways of working 

If you don't feel you have all of these skills, don't panic! A lot of them you'll learn on the job, the main thing is your willingness to learn & positive attitude! 

Is a cleaning job hard?

Cleaning roles can be hard, especially if you have lots of places to clean and only a little amount of time to get it done. The good thing is you'll usually be in a team of other cleaners, so you can all pull together and help one another out!

Overall this can be an enjoyable role, with great hours to suit you - so any hard deadlines are worth it!

What are the jobs of a cleaner?

If you're applying for a Commercial Cleaner role, you could be working in office buildings, schools, public places etc.

Your main role will consist of:

  • Ensuring all floors are clean
  • Mopping, vacuuming etc
  • Removing any rubbish 
  • Reporting any safety hazards to your manager
  • Working on a designated area in a timely manner
