At redwigwam, we have welcomed the Kickstart Scheme with open arms. Over 16,500 young people have now started a job as part of this scheme.

If you aren’t sure what it is, we can give you a run down.

It’s a scheme that’s been put in place by the government, creating new jobs for 16–24-year-olds who are currently on Universal Credit. These people fall into the category who are at risk of long-term employment.

The good news is that they're looking to extend this scheme up until December 2021 and beyond, which means opportunities will continue even once we begin to come out of the pandemic.

We have really embraced this at redwigwam and we’re thrilled to give young professionals a chance to take control of their career, setting them on the right path for their future.

We interviewed our new Kickstart trainees, Patrick (Digital Campaign Coordinator) & Kieran (Sales Advisor) who we’re delighted to have on board with us.

Finding employment before the pandemic was hard, but now it’s even harder for young professionals to get their foot through the door in the world of work. When we asked Patrick what job hunting was like for him after university, he said;

‘I can’t lie, it’s been tough. Universal Credit has been a great support, but I am keen to gain skills and experience which could lead to a long-term opportunity.’

Patrick, 22, currently employed as a Digital Campaign Coordinator.

According to Bloomberg 1 in 8 recent U.K Graduates are unemployed and unemployment among those who recently obtained a degree almost doubled to 12%. This scheme is helping graduates like Patrick gain the skills they need to build their future.  Helping young people build and develop the skills they need for the future is crucial, and this scheme is perfect to give hard-working young professionals a chance they deserve.

We know that young people are usually the hardest hit by the economic crisis, like the one we’re currently in. The latest figures show more than 700,000 young people have left education this year and are entering the labour market at an extremely difficult time and since March, sadly the number of 16–24-year-olds claiming unemployment has risen by over 250,000. That’s why the Kickstart Scheme is a central part our Plan for Jobs, which sets out the biggest package of support for youth unemployment in decades. ”
