What is a Support Worker?

A Support Worker is someone who looks after vulnerable people. You'll be helping them with their day to day lives, offering support and advice where you can. 

You'll be offering them both practical and emotional support, and will be the person they trust and confide in.

Some of the duties and responsibilities are:

  • Bathing/Dressing your client 
  • Light cleaning around the house I.E folding laundry or getting rid of rubbish
  • Medication monitoring 
  • Being a companion for your client
  • Driving them to the doctors / other appointments they may have
  • Grocery shopping

What experience do you need to be a Support Worker?

A lot of the time, Support Work doesn't require any previous experience or qualifications. A NVQ in Health Care (or any other related topic) is an advantage, but employers are mainly looking for someone caring they can train up. 

What skills do I need to be a Support Worker?

Employers will be looking for the following: 

  • Someone who's trustworthy
  • Patient
  • Caring
  • Passionate about caring for others
  • Positive and supportive 

How long does it take to train as a Support Worker?

This depends on your employer. A lot of employers offer full training, and even sort out NVQ's and other qualifications for you to complete whilst you work. Within the first year of working as a Support Worker, you should be confident in the role, and even start thinking of progression opportunities if that interests you.
