My part time job: Merchandising
At RedWigWam we have loads of different ways for you to make money. Worker Emma tells us about her part time job, working as merchandising support in her local Morrison’s supermarket.
“I’ve done various merchandising jobs for RedWigWam over the last 18 months. I have children who are at primary school, so the jobs fit perfectly around my family life.
If I’m honest, I wasn’t really sure what merchandising was at first so I was a bit put off when I saw the jobs advertised. But I’d already done lots of ‘check & purchase’ jobs, and a couple of jobs handing out coupons in Tesco for RedWigWam, which I loved, so merchandising was the next step. And in all honesty, not that scary at all!
Before I started working in Morrison’s, I did a few roles which involved merchandising products for brands in supermarkets. Basically, you have to go into the shop and work with the store colleagues to make sure products are on sale for the customer to buy. Often, you have to find them in the warehouse and put them out (merchandising them) on the shop floor.
You might be a bit sceptical about going in to a supermarket and asking to do this at first – I know I was! But they are used to people going in to do exactly this and everyone I have met has been super helpful. You get a really clear brief from the hirer before you go, and ‘authorisation’ to act on their behalf, which makes it much easier.
Most recently, I’ve been working in my local Morrison’s on their Nutmeg clothing range. I’ve been doing the same job for the last six weeks, which is perfect – and I am going to be there until the end of the year.
When I first started, I got a few hours training so I could understand where all the stock was and exactly what they expected from me. I work as part of a team – my job is to make sure the clothes rails are properly stocked, and look neat and tidy – basically making sure the clothes look really appealing for customers to buy!
It’s very satisfying to see a row of well stocked clothing rails – and it’s important to make sure I am fully on top of the stock so we don’t have too much – or not enough of course!
It’s really good fun working with the rest of the team – the shift usually flies by – and I am back home to pick the kids up from school.”
We have lots of merchandising jobs available at the moment, all over the UK. As well as ongoing work like Emma does, there are also lots of more ad-hoc shifts where you’ll just be needed for a couple of hours. Make sure your profile is up to date, and you have ‘merchandising’ listed in your skills to get matched to jobs in your area.
