6 positives to gain from temping

If you’re offered a job temping, it can be tempting to turn it down in the hope something permanent might be just around the corner. But, before you make a decision, have a look at some of the positives you can take from the experience…

Skills, skills and more skills

When you’re listed as a temp, the chances are you’re going to get offered a variety of temporary positions. It could be customer service, reception/admin, hospitality, catering and so on. No matter what role you do, or what company you’re doing it for, you’ll have the opportunity to learn new skills or develop existing ones. Every company works differently and every position utilises different skillsets. By working as a temp, covering holidays or sick leave or even maternity leave, you’ll be gaining experience across different roles, all of which will enrich your CV and make you more employable.

Being a temp is an excellent opportunity to work for a variety of different companies. This will present you with the opportunity to make good contacts in various sectors – and you never know who might be of help to you in the future. People often say it’s not what you know, it’s who you know – so building up a decent number of contacts is very beneficial!

Okay, so you don’t have a permanent, full-time job. But what you do have is the freedom to pick and choose when you work. Obviously, for most of us, a steady and reliable wage is very important, but it can also be nice, at least once, to experience the freedom which comes with being a temp.

Reality check

In today’s working world, people are working longer hours – late nights and early mornings, as well as weekends. It can be hard to leave work in the office. The good news is as a temp you get to shirk some of the responsibility, and the feeling of being married to your job. Being a temp can offer you the chance to gain perspective of you work-life balance and help to bring you back to what’s really important – making time for yourself.

A step in the right direction

Temping can offer you the chance to gain some invaluable and varied skills for your CV. However, if there’s a field of work you’re particularly interested in, temping for a company in the industry can offer an excellent opportunity to get your foot in the door, and set yourself up nicely for future employment.

A chance to ponder

If you’re not entirely sure what career path you want to head down, temping allows you to dip your toe into different areas. You can experience several industries or sectors without having any obligations or responsibilities towards them, and take some time to decide what you want to do.

So yes, while temping is not for everyone, it can certainly be beneficial. So, if you’re out of work right now, or are having trouble deciding what jobs to apply for, temping could be the ideal situation for you right now.
